How Much Is Concrete Per Yard

Concrete pricing is one of those things that seems simple until you start digging. Then you realize there's a difference between the mix price, the delivery fee, the short-load surcharge, and whatever the pump truck costs. And nobody puts it all in one place.
What Is a Yard of Concrete Anyway
Let's clear up the unit first because this trips people up constantly.
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Consider this: that's a cube three feet on each side. In practical terms, one yard covers about 81 square feet at four inches thick — a standard sidewalk or patio depth. Go six inches thick and you're looking at roughly 54 square feet per yard.
Most residential projects order between two and ten yards. A small shed slab? A typical driveway might need eight to twelve. Maybe one and a half.
Here's where it gets messy: you don't buy concrete by the bag at this scale. They batch it, load it into a mixer truck, and show up at your site with a spinning drum. You order ready-mix from a local plant. The clock starts ticking the moment they arrive.

Regional Factors
Cement costs vary by region. Aggregate (stone and sand) availability changes everything — if a plant has to truck in rock from fifty miles away, that cost gets passed down. Consider this: fuel surcharges fluctuate. Some areas have environmental fees or carbon taxes baked in.

Length × width × depth (in feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards.
Always add 5–10% for waste, spillage, and the fact that your subgrade is never perfectly flat. This leads to 5. Order 2.And that's 600 ÷ 27 = 2. A 10×20 patio at four inches? 22 yards. Round up to the nearest half-yard — most plants batch in half-yard increments.
Step Two: Call Around

Step Four: Prep Before They Arrive
This is where people lose money. The truck shows up, the clock starts, and you're still setting forms or compacting base. Have everything ready:
- Forms set, staked, and square
- Subgrade compacted and damp (not muddy, not bone dry)
- Vapor barrier down if needed
- Reinforcement placed and supported
- Tools staged: screed, bull float, mag float, edger, groover, broom
- Help lined up — you need at least three people for anything over two yards
Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money
Underestimating Volume
The number one mistake. Practically speaking, people calculate the slab area perfectly but forget the thickened edge, the footing, the step down to the garage, the pier blocks. Or they don't add waste factor. Running short means a second delivery — minimum order fees, another delivery charge, cold joint risk. Ordering an extra half yard upfront is cheap insurance.
Ignoring Slump
Slump is workability. Don't just say "regular concrete.If the truck shows up at 3-inch slump and you need 5, you'll be adding water on site — which kills strength. Concrete doesn't "dry" — it cures through a chemical reaction. Most people think 24–48 hours means it's ready for foot traffic. That's the bare minimum. On top of that, for vehicle loads, wait at least seven days. Think about it: for full design strength, 28 days. Rushing this means cracked slabs, failed edges, and callbacks.
Mixing Specs with Wishful Thinking
"I'll just use whatever they have" is a recipe for disaster. Want a driveway that lasts 20 years? You need 4,000 PSI with air entrainment. Also, want a simple shed pad? Maybe 3,000 PSI is fine. Don't let the plant talk you into a cheaper mix because they're out of your specified one — insist on what you ordered, or reschedule.
Final Thoughts: It's a System, Not a Single Decision
Concrete work succeeds when every element aligns: proper volume calculation, correct mix design, timely scheduling, thorough site prep, and patient curing. Day to day, each step builds on the last. Skip one, and you're not just risking a failed pour — you're risking weeks of rework and thousands in unexpected costs.
The difference between a pro job and a DIY disaster usually isn't skill with a trowel. So it's the boring stuff: calling three plants, ordering the right amount, showing up prepared, and waiting patiently. Do that, and your concrete will outlast you.
