If your answer is a shrug and a guess, you're not alone. But here's the thing — getting this number wrong costs money. Order too little and you're making a second trip (or paying rush shipping). Here's the thing — most people don't measure rooms for a living. Order too much and you've got boxes of expensive planks gathering dust in the garage.

What Is Square Footage Anyway

Square footage is just the area of a floor expressed in feet. One square foot is a square that measures 12 inches on each side. Multiply the length of a room by its width and you get the total square feet.

Sounds simple. And for a perfect rectangle, it is. Hallways connect at odd angles. And closets jut out. But rooms aren't always perfect rectangles. Bay windows curve. And that's where most people go wrong — they measure the main rectangle and call it done.

Gross vs. Net Square Footage

You'll hear both terms. And gross square footage is the total area of the space, wall to wall, including closets, pantries, and any nooks. Net square footage subtracts things you won't floor — like a built-in island, a fireplace hearth, or a staircase opening.

For flooring, you want gross. You're covering the whole walkable surface. The only things you subtract are permanent fixtures that sit on top of the finished floor and will never be removed.

Gather Your Tools

Round up to the nearest full box when ordering. Flooring sells in boxes covering a set square footage — usually 18 to 30 square feet per box depending on the product. Stairs — The Separate Calculation

Stair flooring isn't calculated by square foot of floor area. It's calculated by linear foot of tread plus riser, times the number of steps, plus landings.

Measure one tread depth (front to back). Think about it: measure one riser height. Add them together. Multiply by the number of steps. That gives you linear feet of material needed for the treads and risers combined.

Landings are measured as regular floor area.

If you're running the same flooring from the hallway down the stairs, calculate the hallway separately, then add the stair linear footage converted to square footage based on the plank width.

Next, turn that linear footage into square footage by multiplying by the width of the flooring material (expressed in feet). If you’re using 5‑inch‑wide planks, the width is 5 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.4167 ft.

Stair area ≈ 19.4167 ft ≈ 7.Because of that, 0 ft × 0. 9 sq ft.

Apply the appropriate waste factor for stairs—usually the same 7–10 % you’d use for a DIY or complex layout—so:

Adjusted stair area ≈ 7.Plus, 10 ≈ 8. 9 sq ft × 1.7 sq ft.

Now combine this with the hallway (or any other adjoining space) you measured earlier. Add the stair square footage to the hallway’s total, then run the waste‑factor calculation again for the combined area if you plan to install the same product continuously from hallway to stairs.

Finally, convert the total square footage (including waste) into the number of boxes required. Divide the total by the coverage per box (found on the product label) and always round up to the next whole box. To give you an idea, if the hallway + stairs total comes to 120 sq ft and each box covers 20 sq ft, you’ll need 6 boxes (120 ÷ 20 = 6 exactly). If the result were 123 sq ft, you’d need 7 boxes because you can’t purchase a fraction of a box.
