6. Do the Math
Convert everything to decimal feet first.
- 12’ 6” = 12.5
- 10’ 3” = 10.25
- 8’ 9” = 8.75
Multiply length × width for each rectangle. Add them up.
Example:
- Main rectangle: 12.5 × 15.Day to day, 25 = 190. In real terms, 625 sq ft
- Closet: 3 × 4 = 12 sq ft

Paint, wallpaper, drywall, insulation — these need wall square footage, not floor. Floors slope. Practically speaking, ceilings sag. Measure ceiling height at a few spots. Average them.
Wall area = perimeter × height. Subtract doors and windows if you’re being precise. That's why a standard door is 21 sq ft (3’ x 7’). A 3’ x 5’ window is 15 sq ft. For a quick paint estimate, don’t subtract — the extra covers waste, touch-ups, and the ceiling if you’re rolling it too.

**Measuring to the trim
instead of the wall itself. On a 12 × 15 room, that's a few square feet at best. That's an inch per wall — four walls, four inches. The baseboard adds ½" to ¾" on each side. Confusing linear feet with square feet. Baseboards, crown molding, and quarter-round are sold by the linear foot. Flooring, carpet, and drywall are sold by the square foot. Don't mix them up in your head or on your order form. A 12-foot wall doesn't mean you need 12 square feet of anything.
Ignoring transitions and thresholds. Doorways between rooms, steps between levels, and expansion gaps around the perimeter all affect how much material you need. A T-mold or reducer strip isn't included in your flooring square footage — it's a separate purchase. Write these down on your sketch so they don't get lost.
Not accounting for permanent fixtures. Kitchen islands, bathroom vanities, floor registers, radiators, and built-in shelving all eat into usable floor area. If you're installing flooring around a kitchen island, measure the island's footprint and subtract it from your total. If you're painting the walls around a built-in bookshelf, measure the bookshelf's wall footprint and subtract it from your wall area.
