How Do You Figure Yards For Concrete
You're standing in the driveway with a tape measure, a notepad, and a sinking feeling. The concrete truck is scheduled for Tuesday. Think about it: you've measured the patio area three times. But when the dispatcher asks "how many yards?" your mind goes blank.
Yeah. Been there.
Figuring concrete yards isn't complicated math. But it's the kind of math where a small error costs hundreds of dollars — either in a short load that leaves you scrambling, or an overage you're stuck paying for. Let's walk through it properly.
What Is a Yard of Concrete Anyway
Here's the thing that trips people up: a "yard" of concrete isn't a linear yard. On top of that, it's a cubic yard. Twenty-seven cubic feet. Because of that, picture a box three feet wide, three feet long, and three feet deep. That's one yard.
Concrete is sold by volume, not weight. A standard ready-mix truck carries nine to eleven yards depending on the truck and local weight limits. When you order "five yards," you're ordering five of those three-foot cubes.
Most residential projects — patios, walkways, shed slabs, driveways — fall in the one-to-five-yard range. Think about it: bigger pours like full driveways or shop floors can run ten, twenty, thirty yards. At that scale, you're usually bringing in a pump truck and a crew, not DIYing it.
The Formula You'll Actually Use
Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards
That's it. Everything else is just making sure your measurements feed into that formula correctly.
Depth is where people mess up. Which means four inches isn't 0. And 4 feet. It's 0.Worth adding: 333 feet. Consider this: six inches is 0. 5 feet. Eight inches is 0.Even so, 667 feet. If you plug in inches without converting, your order will be off by a factor of twelve.
Why It Matters — The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong
Concrete isn't like lumber where you can run to the store for two more 2x4s. Once that truck leaves the plant, the clock starts. Because of that, most suppliers give you ninety minutes per load before they start charging wait time. After that, the mix starts setting in the drum.
Order short by half a yard on a patio pour? Cold joints are weak points. You're not finishing that slab today. You'll pay for a second minimum-load delivery (usually three yards minimum), wait days for scheduling, and get a cold joint where the new concrete meets the partially cured first pour. They crack. They leak.
Order long by two yards on a driveway? That's $300-$400 down the drain — plus disposal if you can't use the excess. Some guys keep forms handy for stepping stones or pier blocks just in case. Smart.
The dispatcher doesn't care about your math. They care about what you tell them. And that number goes on the ticket. The driver shows up with that much. End of story.
How to Measure — Step by Step
Rectangular Slabs: The Easy Ones
Patio. Shed pad. Sidewalk section. And measure the longest length and the widest width in feet. If it's 14' 6", call it 14.5. Don't round down.
Depth: four inches for patios and sidewalks. Plus, five or six for driveways. Check your local code — some municipalities require six inches minimum for driveways with rebar.
Example: 12' × 10' patio at four inches.

Irregular Shapes: Break It Down

Don't try to average the width. That works for rough estimates but fails on actual orders. Circular and Curved Areas
Pi × radius² × depth ÷ 27.
A 10-foot diameter circle (5-foot radius) at four inches: 3.Now, 14 × 25 × 0. Also, 333 = 26. 17 cubic feet 26.That said, 17 ÷ 27 = 0. 97 yards — call it one yard.
For a half-circle, cut the result in half. For a quarter-circle patio against a house corner, quarter it.
Thickened Edges and Footings
This is where DIYers lose the plot. A slab with a thickened perimeter edge — common for frost protection — needs separate calculation.
Say your 12×10 patio has a 12-inch wide × 18-inch deep edge beam around the perimeter.
Main slab: 12 × 10 × 0.333 = 39.96 cf Edge beam: Perimeter is 44 linear feet. 44 × 1 × 1.Which means 5 = 66 cf Total: 105. 96 cf ÷ 27 = 3.

Each step is its own rectangle. Rise × run × width × number of steps.

Common Mistakes — What Most People Get Wrong
Measuring the Form Lumber, Not the Inside Dimension
Your 2×4 forms are 3.In practice, 5 inches thick. Two sides = 7 inches lost. A "12-foot" form board gives you 11' 5" inside. Think about it: measure inside the forms after they're staked and braced. Not the lumber. Not the plan. The actual cavity getting filled.
Forgetting Waste and Spillage

It happens. A homeowner calls in "twelve yards" for a 10×10 patio. Write it down. The dispatcher will ask "cubic yards?Plus, know your number. " but if you say "yeah, twelve," they'll send it. That's a truck and a half for a job needing one yard. Read it back.
Not Accounting for Pump Loss

- Mix design: 3000, 3500, 4000 psi? Air entrainment? Fiber? For exterior flatwork in freeze-thaw: 4000 psi, 5–6% air, no calcium chloride. Interior garage slab: 3500 psi, no air, fiber okay.
- Slump: Four inches for hand placement. Five to six for pumping. Don't say "wet." Say the number.
- Quantity: Exact yards. "Three and a quarter." Not "around three."
- Delivery window: "Between 7 and 7:30." Not "morning." Concrete waits for no one.
- Address and access: Narrow gate? Overhead wires? Steep driveway? Tell them before* the truck leaves the plant.
- On-site contact: Your phone. Not your spouse's. Not the contractor's. Yours.
The Day Of: Final Checks
Walk the forms one last time. Think about it: diagonals equal? Which means corners square? Worth adding: grade stakes at final elevation? So expansion joint material against the house, the driveway, the steps? Vapor barrier down, seams taped, no tears? Rebar or mesh on chairs — not lying in the dirt? Control joint layout snapped?
Have your tools ready: mag float, bull float, edger, groover, broom, trowels, knee boards. Water source connected. Washout area designated. Helpers briefed — one on chute, one on vibrator, two spreading, one finishing.
Check the ticket when the truck arrives. On the flip side, reject if it's wrong. Verify mix, slump, air, yards, time batched. Once you sign, it's yours.
When the Math Meets the Mud
You calculated 1.75 yards. In real terms, the truck shows up with 1. Which means 75 yards. Plus, you pour, screed, float, edge, groove, broom. You wash out. Also, you cover with plastic. You wait.
Twenty-eight days later, that patio is still flat. In practice, no cracks where the control joints aren't. Here's the thing — no scaling at the edges. No callback.
That's what the math was for. Not to pass a test. To make the pour boring. Practically speaking, boring is good. Boring means you slept the night before. Boring means the client pays the final invoice without hesitation.
Measure twice. Order once. Pour right.
