How To Measure For Yards Of Concrete
You're standing in the driveway with a tape measure, a notepad, and a sinking feeling. The concrete truck is scheduled for Tuesday. You've measured the slab three times and gotten three different numbers. Sound familiar?
Yeah. Me too.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: calculating concrete isn't hard math. On the flip side, it's just careful math. And the difference between "close enough" and "exactly right" is usually about $200 — either in wasted material or a short load that leaves you scrambling.
What Is a Yard of Concrete Anyway
People say "yard" like it's a linear measurement. On the flip side, it's not. In practice, a cubic yard* is a volume: three feet by three feet by three feet. Consider this: twenty-seven cubic feet. That's it. That's the whole unit.
If you're order concrete, you're ordering by the cubic yard. Worth adding: not "truckloads. Not square feet. Not bags. " Cubic yards.
A standard ready-mix truck holds between 9 and 11 yards depending on the axle configuration and local weight limits. In practice, most residential jobs need anywhere from 2 to 6 yards. If you're pouring a patio, a sidewalk, or a shed pad, you're in that range.
The Formula You'll Actually Use
Length × Width × Depth = Cubic Feet
Cubic Feet ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards
That's the entire equation. Everything else is just making sure your inputs are right.
Why It Matters / Why People Care
Concrete isn't like lumber. You can't cut a piece off the end and use it tomorrow. Because of that, you can't return the extra. Once that truck pulls away, what's in your forms is what you paid for — and what you didn't order is a problem you'll solve with cold joints, weak spots, or a frantic call to the plant for a second load at a premium price.
Short loads hurt. That fee can run $100 to $200 on top of the per-yard price. Most plants charge a "short load fee" for anything under their minimum — usually 3 to 5 yards. 3 yards when the minimum is 3? Order 2.You're paying for 3 anyway, plus the fee.
Over-ordering hurts differently. Here's the thing — at $140 to $180 per yard (varies wildly by region), three extra yards is real money. And you can't just "use it somewhere else" unless you happened to have another form ready and waiting.
Then there's the time factor. Concrete doesn't wait. If you're short, the crew stands around. The concrete in the truck starts setting. The finisher gets antsy. The whole day shifts.
Getting the number right isn't about being precise for precision's sake. It's about not lighting money on fire.
How to Measure for Yards of Concrete
Step One: Sketch It Out
Don't measure in your head. Even so, draw it. Graph paper is ideal — one square equals one foot — but a napkin sketch works if that's what you have. Label every dimension. Break complex shapes into rectangles and triangles. Circles too, if you're feeling ambitious.
A patio with a bump-out for a grill? In real terms, two rectangles. Two rectangles. Think about it: an L-shaped sidewalk? Day to day, a driveway flare? Rectangle plus triangle.
Write the dimensions on the sketch. In real terms, not in a separate list. On the sketch.* Future you will thank present you when you're standing there with a calculator and dirt on your hands.
Step Two: Measure Length and Width
Measure the inside* of your forms. Not the outside. Not the string line. The forms.
If your forms aren't set yet, measure the excavation. But add the form thickness to your mental model — a 2×4 form eats 1.5 inches per side. On a 20-foot run, that's not nothing.
Measure in feet and decimal feet. In practice, not feet-and-inches. Day to day, your calculator doesn't speak "12 feet 7 inches. " It speaks 12.58 feet.
Quick conversion cheat sheet because nobody memorizes this:
- 1 inch = 0.Practically speaking, 083 feet
- 2 inches = 0. 167 feet
- 3 inches = 0.But 25 feet
- 4 inches = 0. 333 feet

Tape measures with decimal feet printed on them exist. Buy one. It's the best $15 you'll spend on this job.
Step Three: Determine Depth (Thickness)
This is where people guess. Don't guess.
- Sidewalks and patios: 4 inches minimum. 4.5 or 5 if you expect heavy furniture or a hot tub.
- Driveways: 5 inches minimum for passenger cars. 6 inches if trucks or RVs park there. 7 to 8 for commercial.
- Shed pads: 4 inches is fine for most. 6 if you're parking a mower or storing heavy gear.
- Footings and grade beams: Per plan. Don't wing structural elements.
Check your local code. Some municipalities require 5 inches for any driveway. Some require wire or rebar at specific depths. The inspector doesn't care what you meant* to pour.

Step Four: Do the Math for Each Section
Rectangle: Length × Width × Depth (in feet) = Cubic Feet
Triangle: (Base × Height ÷ 2) × Depth = Cubic Feet

Add every section's cubic feet together. Then divide by 27.
Example: A 12×20 patio at 4 inches, plus a 4×6 landing at 4 inches, plus a 3-foot wide sidewalk running 15 feet at 4 inches.
Patio: 12 × 20 × 0.Now, 333 = 79. Worth adding: 92 cubic feet Landing: 4 × 6 × 0. 333 = 7.99 cubic feet Sidewalk: 3 × 15 × 0.333 = 14.99 cubic feet Total: 102.9 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 3.
Step Five: Add Waste Factor
This is the part everyone forgets. Or argues about.
You will* spill some. The subgrade isn't perfectly flat — low spots eat concrete. Forms deflect. You will* have some left in the pump hose or the chute. The guy finishing the edges rounds them over, eating a little volume.
Standard waste factor: 5% to 10%.
- Simple rectangular slab on well-prepped subgrade: 5%
- Complex shapes, pump job, uneven subgrade, or first-time crew: 10%
- Anything with thickened edges, turndowns, or steps: add those volumes separately, then apply waste factor to
Apply it to the total cubic feet, then divide by 27.
Using the example above: 102.05 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 4.9 cubic feet × 1.Still, 05 (5% waste) = 108. 0 yards.
At 10% waste: 102.9 × 1.Think about it: 10 = 113. Because of that, 2 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 4. 2 yards.
You'd round up to 4.Because of that, 0 yards when your calculation says 4. And 5 yards in either case — most ready-mix suppliers have a minimum order and charge a short-load fee if you're under about 3 yards. So 0 is cutting it dangerously close. On the flip side, ordering 4. The 4.5-yard order gives you a small buffer on top of the waste factor already baked in.
Step Six: Know Your Truck and Your Supplier
A standard ready-mix truck carries 9 to 11 cubic yards. For a small residential slab, you're usually looking at a half-truck (4 to 4.5 yards) or a full truck (8 to 10 yards).
Call your supplier early. Now, get a quote. Ask them:
- What's your minimum order?
- What's the short-load fee?
- Do you charge standby time if the crew isn't ready when you arrive?
- What's the turnaround time on the truck?
Concrete doesn't wait. The clock starts the second the drum begins spinning. Consider this: on a hot day, you've got about 45 minutes to an hour of working time. On a cool day, maybe 60 to 90 minutes. Plan your crew, your forms, your finish tools, and your water supply before you call that truck.
Step Seven: Do a Final sanity Check
Before you place the order, walk your layout one more time.
- Did you account for the thickness of the forms? (Yes, in Step Two.)
- Did you include every section — the sidewalk, the landing, the thickened edge? (Yes, in Step Four.)
- Did you apply waste? (Yes, in Step Five.)
- Did you convert everything to decimal feet before multiplying? (If not, go back and fix it.)
Then add a little margin on top of the waste if this is your first time pouring this size slab. You can return unopened bags of mix if you ordered too much, but you can't un-pour a short load.
The Bottom Line
Measuring concrete isn't rocket science, but it does require precision and a system. Measure in decimal feet, calculate each section separately, sum them up, add waste, round up to the nearest half-yard, and confirm with your supplier.
Get it right on paper, and the pour goes smooth. Get it wrong, and you're either paying for extra concrete you'll never use or — worse — stopping the truck mid-pour because you ran short. Neither outcome is fun.
Do the math. Double-check it. That said, write it down. Then order the concrete and get to work.
