Here's something most people don't realize: roofing isn't measured in square feet like your interior rooms. Which means it's measured in squares*. A roofing square equals 100 square feet. So when you hear someone say "this roof is 15 squares," they mean 1,500 square feet of roof surface.
Shingles are sold by the bundle, and typically three bundles cover one square. Because of that, architectural shingles (the dimensional kind that look like layered wood) often come four or even five bundles per square because they're thicker. But—and this matters—different shingle types have different bundle coverage. That's the baseline. Always check the label before you buy.

How to Calculate Shingles for a Roof

If you have access to your attic, you can measure from inside. Find a rafter or truss and measure from the exterior wall to the ridge. Day to day, add a foot or two for overhangs if they're included in your measurement point. Then measure the length of that plane along the ridge.

Step 2: Adjust for Roof Pitch
This is where things get slightly more technical, but it's manageable. Pitch is expressed as a ratio — 4/12, 6/12, 8/12, etc. The first number is the rise (inches the roof goes up), the second is the run (horizontal inches).

For a 4/12 pitch, the actual slope factor is about 1.054. For 6/12, it's about 1.118. Which means for 8/12, it's about 1. 202. So for 10/12, it's about 1. 302.
Multiply your measured or calculated surface area by the pitch factor. If you measured a plane that's 30 feet by 20 feet, that's 600 square feet. If that plane has a 6/12 pitch, multiply 600 by 1.118, which gives you roughly 671 square feet.
There's an easier way to estimate if you don't want to do the math. You can find pitch factor tables online or in roofing guides. Some apps and online calculators will do this automatically if you input the pitch.
Step 3: Add It All Together
Once you've calculated each plane and adjusted for pitch, add them all up. That gives you the total square footage of your actual roof surface.
Now convert to squares. Divide by 100. So 2,100 square feet equals 21 squares.
Step 4: Account for Waste
Waste happens. Still, it's not a failure — it's reality. Shingles get cut to fit around edges, vents, and corners. Some get damaged on the job. A cut shingle on one side of a valley becomes waste on the other side.
For a simple roof with straight cuts, 10-15% waste is typical. For a complex roof with lots of hips,
valleys, and dormers, bump that to 15-20%. Some roofers even add a buffer for future repairs — matching shingles years later is tough, so having extras on hand isn't a bad idea.
Take your total square count, multiply by 1.And 15 (for 15% waste), and round up to the nearest full bundle or square. That 21 squares becomes roughly 24 squares to order.
Step 5: Translate to Bundles
Shingles typically come in bundles that cover about 1/3 of a square each, or 33.3 square feet. Three bundles equal one square.
For our 24 squares, you'd need 72 bundles. Most suppliers sell by the square, so you'd actually order 24 squares of shingles, which arrives as 72 bundles. Simple.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming your roof is simple. What looks simple from the street might have a second-story addition, a garage bump-out, or a porch roof that adds planes you didn't account for. Walk the perimeter. Count the sections.
Forgetting the starter strip. The first row of shingles along the eaves needs a special starter strip or reversed-orientation shingles. This requires extra material that people often forget.
Not accounting for the ridge cap. The peak of your roof needs cap shingles, which are either special products or cut from regular three-tab shingles. You need about 100 linear feet of ridge cap per square for a standard gable, but the math varies.
Confusing squares with square feet. This trips people up constantly. One square equals 100 square feet. Always.
Ordering exactly what you calculate. Even perfect measurements leave room for error. Always order at least one extra bundle beyond your waste calculation.
